Safeguarding

Safeguarding is defined in the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 as:

“Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s
responsibility. ‘Children’ means everyone under the age of 18. In order to fulfil
this responsibility effectively, all practitioners should make sure their approach
is child centred. This means that they should consider, at all times,
what is in the best interests of the child.”

Communication with Parents and Carers

Our school is committed to working openly and positively with parents and carers when there are concerns about a child’s welfare or safety. Where appropriate, we will discuss concerns with parents or carers and seek their consent before making a referral to another agency.

However, there may be circumstances where it is not appropriate to seek consent. This may be the case if doing so could:

  • Put a child at risk of significant harm or increase an existing risk of harm.

  • Put a vulnerable adult at risk of harm.

  • Interfere with or compromise enquiries being carried out by Children’s Social Care or the police.

We will always aim to ensure that parents and carers understand the safeguarding responsibilities placed on the school and its staff, and the steps we may need to take when concerns arise.

In some circumstances, and in order to protect a child, the school may need to seek advice from or share information with other agencies without informing parents or carers beforehand. Our first priority is always the welfare and safety of the child, and we have a duty to act in their best interests.

Where necessary, consultation with other agencies may lead to a formal referral. This could result in involvement from Children’s Social Care and/or the police, including visits to the family home.

We recognise that this can be a difficult and distressing experience for families. We will approach such situations sensitively and professionally and will follow the safeguarding procedures and guidance set out by Walsall Safeguarding Partnership.

PREVENT

At our school, we all have a part to play in creating a safe, welcoming and respectful community. We encourage our pupils to value and respect others, celebrate diversity and develop positive relationships with those around them.

We are committed to ensuring that every child feels safe, supported and able to learn in an environment where everyone is treated with kindness and respect. Through working together as a school community, we help our children develop the knowledge, confidence and understanding they need to make positive choices and contribute to a safe and inclusive society.

What is the PREVENT Strategy?

PREVENT is part of the UK Government's safeguarding strategy. It aims to:

  • Address the ideological causes and influences associated with terrorism and extremism.

  • Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and provide appropriate support to those who may be at risk of radicalisation.

  • Work closely with a range of organisations and services, including schools, to identify and respond to concerns about extremism and radicalisation.

  • Address all forms of terrorism and extremism, including far-right extremism and aspects of non-violent extremism.

Our Commitment

Safeguarding our pupils is everyone's responsibility. If a child or family member has a concern about extremism, radicalisation or the safety and wellbeing of a child, we encourage them to speak to a member of our safeguarding team.

Together, we can help create a school community where everyone feels safe, respected, valued and able to thrive.

Curriculum

Keeping children safe is embedded throughout our curriculum, with particular focus through our PSHE, Computing and E-Safety, Citizenship, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and British Values.

Through our Jigsaw PSHE programme and other age-appropriate resources, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to keep themselves safe, build resilience, manage risks and develop healthy relationships.

Children learn about personal boundaries, respectful relationships, online safety and how to recognise and respond to situations that may make them feel unsafe. They are encouraged to speak to trusted adults and understand how and where to seek help and report concerns.
